Discover France

Discover France

Discover France was created in 1994 and is the leader of providing tours in France. They go to 11 different regions, more than anyone else. All listed rides are self guided, which we recommend highly to any seasoned traveler and rider. There are many reasons to consider self-guided travel, including: 1. Much less expensive (usually 35-50% less than guided!) 2. Flexible dates ... you can start on any date you like 3. More customization. You still get emergency assistance and transfer of bags, so it's not like you are riding with 30 pounds of gear and sleeping in tents. Personally, we do at least half of our bike tours self-guided because we like the flexibility. Also, if you want a guided tour, Discover France will create a custom guided trip for you if you put your own group together

DO NOT DO THE BEST OF PROVENCE TOUR unless you are comfortable with dangerous roads, an unreliable navigation app, and unreliable instructions on a paper road map. The most dangerous segment, between Cavaillon and St. Remy de Provence, is completely avoidable via a dedicated bike path, but neither the app nor the written road map include directions for this. Instead, the route includes a short but terrifying segment on a VERY busy road with a narrow bike lane and large trucks whizzing by. In addition, both the app and the road map are inaccurate every day in several places, but never in the SAME place – so then, the rider must decide which one to follow! We were told to use the app primarily, but it does not use GPS navigation so if you get off route, it only tells you that this has happened – not how to fix it. Thank goodness for many kind people who helped when we got lost, including German couple who were traveling with a different bike company and showed us where to get on the stress-free and lovely Velo green bike route to St. Remy after the busy road segment described previously. True, there were only a few dangerous segments on the route but they were so scary that they ruined the days when they occurred. That, plus lousy directions via both the app and the road map, made this much more challenging ride than we were promised and a much less pleasant ride than we anticipated. This was our fourth trip with Discover France but we will never, ever use them again. Buyer beware!

We cycled the Bordeaux region from September 20-26, 2021. Valentina was very poor in her communication skills. We had to contact her 5 days before the trip to inquire if it was even happening, as we had not received a request for final payment.
We arranged with Valentina to have our bikes fitted at 9:00am the first day of cycling as opposed to the evening before. At 9:20am we called Discover France as our bikes had not arrived. No one was aware of this plan. After numerous calls our bikes arrived close to 1:00 pm. It was a complete scramble. No proper fitting was done. Several seats were tipped forward and very uncomfortable. Bike parts needed to be transferred from one bike to another, they did not have the proper tools to secure the GPSs, fortunately we did, and on it went. Odometers were not calibrated when we received the bikes, and therefore never used. From the get-go my husband was complaining that his bike was making a funny noise. We were so rushed for time that when we stopped to take a look an hour later he noticed that his front wheel wasn’t locked in! We thanked our lucky stars that he wasn’t injured. After the chaotic start to our trip, Valentina called to check-in on us at our first hotel to ensure that all was well. Very thoughtful of her.
The bikes were well maintained but far too heavy for the terrain we were covering. In addition, as a group of 6, we were given far too many repair materials ie. 2 spare tubes per person, which also added to the weight. The routes we covered were lovely. The countryside was scenic, reasonably quiet, and the scheduled distances each day were satisfactory. The maps however were not user friendly. The print was far too small and too much information crammed in on them, making them difficult to read.
Luggage transportation from one accommodation to the next was excellent. The accommodation and meals provided throughout the trip were superb. Staff at each hotel was very friendly and helpful.

We have done 2 self-guided tours with Discover France (Loire Valley and Istria Wine Roads in Croatia), and both were fabulous. While we worked off the online tour descriptions, we did customize both trips a little, which was extremely simple. The staff at Discover France were also VERY helpful with public transport and other recommendations. The Loire Valley trip we used a GPS, but not on the Croatian tour, which was fine because the in-country travel company that Discover France partnered with (Fiore Adventure Travels) had great maps and provided overall great support. Accommodations were terrific, bikes were great, and baggage transfer went perfectly on both tours. The Croatian trip was rated “Casual,” but did involve significant elevation changes, so if you are not a fan of some decent climbing, you should elect the e-assist bike. We are looking forward to our next biking trip in Europe (wherever it might be!) and will definitely be using Discover France again.

We toured in the Dordogne region of France – our second tour with Discover France. We had a terrific trip – the region was far less touristed than the Loire where we were last year. The routes took us on small roads with little traffic through farm land, rolling hills, by castles, and, the highlight of our trip, through an area filled with caves and ancient cave art. Be sure to reserve tickets in advance for the popular caves near Les Eyzies! The Discover France team handled all of our logistics well, especially when we were trying to match frequent flyer availability with dates of our trip – they were very patient and accommodating with our changes. Can’t wait for the next trip!

My husband and I did a Discover France tour of Provence during our honeymoon, and it was spectacular. Everything was very well organized, from the bikes to the maps and GPS, and we had a great time. We loved that we were given the GPS and maps and could make our way at our own pace (which turned out to be quickly!), and that we could explore along the way. The hotels we stayed at were great, and our luggage arrived on time. Thanks for such a wonderful trip – it’s a honeymoon we will never forget!

The self-guided tour was a first for my husband and me who are both 60+ years of age. We chose road bikes and for the most part were glad we did. The bikes, however, were not equipped with map holders, so it was a bit awkward and annoying! Still, everything else about the tour was top-notch. Hotels were 3-4 star, all with excellent location and helpful, friendly staff. Breakfasts and included dinner were fantastic. There were a few problems with navigation directions, and the road into Uzes was questionable for road bikes (washed out, gravel, etc.) but we managed just the same. Though there was a bit more of in-town riding than expected, most routes were picturesque countryside and/or mountain scenes were breathtaking. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and are considering another tour.

We did the Loire Valley Tour. Accommodation, food, routes, preparation, people, overall experience etc. were great. And my god the baguettes in France are to die for – nothing even close is available in Alberta. My one issue is the guide books. The maps and route directions are generally inadequate. The maps are way too large scale to provide useful information except in a general way and direction sets are too skimpy. France is wonderfully beautiful country but the roads, alleys, lanes, and paths are very confusing and some level of cross checking information would make the day go smoother. Otherwise excellent trip, would do it again (now that I know where I’m going!)

We recently did the Luberon Bike Tour through Discover France and it was one of the best trips we’ve ever done. We can’t recommend them enough. Self-guided tours are the way to go since they give you the freedom and flexibility to explore an area on your own without worrying about booking or moving luggage around. Discover France is extremely thorough in preparing your trip: someone always answered our questions right away and they provided excellent pre-trip documentation. Their road book, with directions and descriptions of different cycling routes is very helpful; the bikes are great. Our Discover France rep even called us on our second night in Bedoin just to check how things were going. The chosen routes are well-thought-out, very scenic with little traffic on most of the roads. The hotels were great, especially Hotel les Pins in Bedoin, by far our favourite of the trip. Mont Ventoux up the Bedoin route was very hard and only cyclists who have done a lot of climbing should attempt it.

We did the 7 day Loire trip – fantastique! Perfect trip if one of you does not want to climb any mountains, and still be in a gorgeous part of France, with plenty of time to stop for lunch, sip wine at a picnic on the road etc. I also highly recommend the company – Discover France. Great attention to detail in every way. 5 stars. We will definitely be using them again. And I’m picky…

We did a self-guided tour through Discover France. 7 friends, first time biking adventure to Bordeaux France. Although several of our riders are experienced in 1-day or 2-day rides in the US and seasoned international travelers – this was our first international biking trip. Discover France provided solid service from pre-trip planning, check lists, to day 1 orientation (via telephone), to clear maps/directions, and great places that we stayed each night. We had 2 bike problems during the journey – and their phone support and relations they had in local towns provided the necessary repairs in a timely fashion. The pricing was very fair and the customer service and quality of bikes (road bikes and hybrids) was excellent. We look forward to our next adventure.

This is the 3rd European Self-Guided Bike Trip we have taken with Discover France/Pure Adventures. We have used another company, but found them inferior and now will only travel with Discover France guiding us. We biked through Southern Italy–Puglia with a group of 9 friends. The accommodations were outstanding, the maps and routes were excellent (and the total travel cost for the package was very reasonable.) Our expectations were exceeded with all the great scenery we biked through and the historic hotel accommodations! Thanks again Discover France.

DF provides a well-organized, scenic and accessible tour of the Western Loire Valley. This was our first self-guided tour in late October and it couldn’t have been more pleasant or enjoyable. Their directions, maps, and GPS reassured us and their selection of hotels and luggage transfers was super. It was also a great value compared to other tour companies we considered. The scenery was beautiful and the route took us through vineyards, past regal chateaux, and into lovely villages. We will certainly use DF again in the future!

Our trip to Ireland was a wonderful experience in large part because of the excellent help with our trip from Discover France. The bicycles we rented were in great condition and were delivered and adjusted to the needs of our very large group of travelers. Accomodations in Ireland were stunning and the Discover France staff oriented us and then gave us the privacy we wanted for this kind of independent inn to inn biking experience. My wife and I ttok our sons, age 14 and 11, on the 3 day bike tour of the Loire Valley. As very novice cyclists we found the level of difficulty just right for our family, and the bikes very comfortable. The boys had fun using the electronic gizmos and keeping us on the right track. Visiting the chateaux are memories we will never forget. Paddling down the Cher under Ch. Chenanceau was unbelievable. Staying in one spot ( the spectacular Manoir les Minimes) and taking day long loops was ideal for us, and allowed us to explore Amboise extensively.

Bottom line: outstanding customer service. My sister and I did a self-guided 6-day 300+ mile bike ride across the Loire Valley (the Loire Challenging trip) with DiscoverFrance. The accommodations were wonderful, the trip was well coordinated, the bikes and gear were in great condition, and the maps and cue sheets were very good. THe best part though was Sebastien. Delta/AirFrance lost my sister’s luggage and we spent the first 5 days wrestling with airline customer service agents, delivery companies, hotels, and international cellphone calls trying to coordinate getting the @#*! suitcase. Finally, we asked Sebastien, the in-country emergency contact, if he could help. I wish we’d done that days earlier. He, and his fluent French, took over everything and got the luggage to us super-quick. I can’t emphasize enough how frustrating it was to worry about the luggage while biking in the same clothes for the 3rd day in a row while spending enormous sums on international cellphone calls.

A great time from start to finish! The maps were easy to follow and basically took us through southern France (Provence-Classic tour)on country lanes-there was hardly any traffic. Hotels were amazing and our luggage were forwarded to the next without any problems. It was nice to travel by bike alone, without the hassle of packing panniers so full gear it was drudery, as I have done in the past. We are already planning another trip for 2011-this time it’s to Southern Italy. I would highly recommend Discover to anyone.

This was an unguided tour where Discover France arranged hotels, transport of bags to the next town, bikes and detailed route maps. The routes were varied and avoided traffic for the most part, albiet a bit hillier than advertised. The hotels were usually historic buildings in the heart of the old parts of the towns we visited. We once had two flats in the same day so they dispatched very quickly a van to help us. Once in a while the directions were a bit hard to follow and could have benefited from more use of street names, but overall were great. The route took us through vineyards, olive orchards, woods, farmlands and small villages and was well-designed. On days where we stayed in the same village for two consecutive days they included loop tours that could be taken, but we found them to be too long and that a day of lesser riding to be welcome. Would definitely recommend this and doing it again in other locations. Going with support as opposed to a guided group is much more fun!

We did a 3-day family trip in the Loire Valley and loved every minute of the experience. The upgraded accommodations were terrific and we loved the fact that we could alter routes as we wanted and returned to the same hotel each night. The DF staff went above and beyond what we expected and in addition to the normal outstanding routes, maps, GPS and bikes they took it upon themselves to secure a tandem for us to cycle safely with our visually impaired daughter. We rode Discover France’s Loire Classic. They made the arrangements for the trip and provided assistance with figuring out how to reach the Loire Valley and then continue the rest of our trip afterwards. On arrival, we were met by the Discover France representative, Sebastian, who gave us our bikes and gear. He took time to review the route with us, explain our options and answer questions. One nice feature is Discover France provided a GPS with preprogrammed routes. Our accommodations included an inn in Amboise with quaint rooms and a garden café and a more modern hotel in Blois with rooms more akin to that you would see in the US. The itinerary allowed us to stay two nights at each hotel, so that we did not have to pack up each day. Discover France transferred our bags. We were provided breakfast each morning and one dinner was included. That was fine, because it allowed us to explore the towns where we were staying and try different foods.

We took 5-day Loire tour (3 scheduled days of biking) and really enjoyed freedom of self-guided tour. Support level is not as high as guided tour (we had thunder/lightning the first day and broken chain on second day, both of which took over an hour to address/remedy) but we would absolutely do it, again. Eating sandwiches on fresh-baked bread in town square among local, French villagers; using our rusty language skills; enjoying great meals at a great price; stopping as long as we wanted to at attractions along the way and having family bike together at our own pace made it all worthwhile!

We loved our five-day (too short) tour of Provence, organized by Discover France. Self-guided tours are terrific for couples who want privacy and the ability to go at their own pace through the French countryside. Discover France plotted the route, with helpful highlights and suggestions along the way, booked our accommodations, and transferred our bags from hotel to hotel so we could ride free. Although they were only a phone call away in case of bike trouble, we felt wonderfully free and left alone to enjoy the French countryside. Highly recommended!

These are self guided cycling trips with excellent directions and accommodations. Just returned from the Pyrenees trip. The cycling routes are truly classic. If you are a fan of the TDF you understand the challenges and I won’t describe them. Rather, let me say that the accommodations at the Hotel Miramont in Argeles are great. Beautiful property, centrally located in this small town, extremely gracious hosts and owners, very nice, clean rooms. great food and service. I can’t say enough. We loved our self guided bike tour with Discover France. We did three full days of biking, from 35K to 55K a day. After that, we were ready to stay in one place for a day and relax. But I was ready to get back on the bike right after that! What a beautiful experience. Our baggage was transferred from hotel to hotel, 2 amazing dinners and all ‘petits dejeuners’ were provided. We rode through unbelievably beautiful countrysides, and visited at least one chateau a day! One thing that could have been better, was that the bikes did not have kickstands, a mirror to keep track of your partner, and traffic, would have been great too. But these are minor details. I would recommend the Discover France tour anytime!

Along canals, rivers, and a long one along an old train line ( get lots of shade as well). Great mix of accomodations. The bikes were great. From airport transport to wonderful hotels and restaurant recommendations, we could not have had a better experience. We will definitely use Discover France again!

My wife and I just finished a week-long Discover France bike trip in Tuscany. Great time indeed. Bikes were excellent. Hotels were all very unique and comfortable. Maps and directions worked perfectly. Most importantly, the scenery and experiences were truly once in a lifetime for us. This week-long tour was even better than our last DF bike trip in Provence, which is high praise indeed.

Discover France was extremely helpful in setting up our tour and tailoring it to our specifics. Once on the tour they were great about adjusting things to accommodate us. The routes they picked were beautiful, bikes were excellent and hotels were perfect. For anyone wanting to lead their own trip but wanting help with logistics, I would highly recommend Discover France.

Discover France is the best Bike company that my wife and I have worked with… The bikes were very good, the trip notes and GPS were enormously helpful and your places to stay were really great. The chosen routes are also very pleasant to bicycle along and with a good degree of safety and interest. This was our sixth bike tour in France and we enjoyed it enormously as we were able to customize it and Discover France’s suggestions were perfect.

Excellent route with superb support (maps, GPS, personnel, equipment) and wonderful itinerary that included a range of things to see and do. The hotels we stayed in ranged from very good to excellent. We highly recommend Discover France and would happily do another tour with them.

Great communication before the ride. We liked the self-guided aspect. Very efficient about getting us the rental bikes and moving our luggage between hotels. Accomodations were lovely. Only problem was that the route given us was one difficulty level harder than the literature had promised, so we had less time and energy to explore churches, etc. along the way.

We completed the Loire Valley deluxe tour. It was an amazing experience overall, for a pair of biking amateurs! The accommodation was nothing short of luxurious, and the food was outstanding. The rides were just the right length and difficulty for us. We were able to appreciate the gorgeous French countryside while feeling as though we were working off the three course dinner from the night before! The GPS was a godsend, as we didn’t get lost once. All the staff were friendly and professional.

The trip exceeded our expectations. The route was excellent, and we marvelled at how we spent all of our time on quiet safe roads, complete with beautiful scenery. We met some other cyclists and quickly realized that Discover France provided the best maps and best of all – a GPS – something no one else had. We would never do another trip without the GPS! The service both before we left and while in France was outstanding!

Our trip was wonderful! All went exactly according to plan, the weather was perfect, the chosen routes and scenery were beautiful and very manageable, the GPS tracking device provided was a wonderful and helpful convenience with all routes pre-entered, the included evening dinner in the first hotel was the best we’ve had anywhere in France so far, the buffet breakfast in the second hotel was delicious, and all in all it was an unforgettable experience that I’d definitely recommend to anyone.
